The handiwork of God surrounds us every day. I confess that on most days, I lack awe with God’s handiwork due to the largely mundane of ordinary life. I take for granted all that God created for humankind to enjoy and steward. Nevertheless, God gently, yet powerfully, reoriented my soul towards His handiwork in the past week.
Handiwork – Something that is made or done. The works of God as Creator. Craftsmanship. Work done by hand, highlighting intentional effort and creative design.
My husband and I drove through the San Juan Mountains traveling from Durango to Denver and the familiar song, “My God is So Big,” played on repeat in my head. God met my gaze with His grandeur. He brought me back to the holy, mighty nature of His character. He alone is God Almighty!
My God is so big, so strong and so mighty
There’s nothing my God cannot do
My God is so big, so strong and so mighty
There’s nothing my God cannot do
The mountains are His, the rivers are His
The stars are His handiwork too
My God is so big, so strong and so mighty
There’s nothing my God cannot do.
Located in southwest Colorado, the rugged San Juan range shoots into the sky with hundreds of peaks over 13,000 feet and thirteen peaks over 14,000 feet. The mountains resemble the Swiss Alps. The scenery stunned my eyes as the sharp steep mountainside surround the highway traversing through the heart of the mountain range.
I gawked at the beauty of God’s handiwork. The mountains, rocks, pine trees and aspens, waterfalls, and rivers declared, in chorus, the vast, creative work of God. The craftsmanship of the Divine took my breath away. I saw giant cliffs, smelled pine needles, and heard the gurgle of rushing streams. The impact of God’s intentional and creative work moved me to worship.
After arriving home, I noticed signs of spring in the yard. With fresh eyes, I took in the buds on the trees. I noticed the tiny white flowers and whiffed the fragrant floral aroma in the air. God met my gaze with His diverse creativity. His handiwork stirred my soul to praise. Broad leaves and green stems sprang past the surface of the soil, developing small buds at their tips.
The tulips in the yard stretch towards the sun. Flowers begin to unfold. Now, I look with anticipation to see what brilliant colors will burst forth. I marvel at the handiwork of God with the details of each tulip. A strength manifests through the unfurling sprouts filled with exquisite feather petals.
God designed both the mighty San Juan Mountains and the strong and dainty tulip. Both reveal the work of the hands of God. Wherever you are this week, stop to notice the handiwork of God in creation.
Marvel and gaze at clouds in the sky and colors along the ground. Inhale the smell of winter rain and the scent of flowers and grass. Listen to the wind blow by your face and raindrops splash upon hitting the ground. Feel the heat of the sunshine upon your skin and the grass between your toes. Taste the pollen in the air and the cool clear water from a stream. Let the handiwork of creation created by God lead you to awe and worship. Our God is so big, so strong, and so mighty, there is nothing our God cannot do!
This week – – –
Reflect. How often do you marvel at the handiwork of God through creation? Intentionally slow down this week to allow margin for gazing at God’s workmanship. What do you notice about the intricacies of the design and creativity of God? Talk with God about the ways creation draws you to Himself and leads you to praise His name.
Request. If you discover yourself too busy or distracted to appreciate the handiwork of God, confess to God and live in His cleansing. Ask God to increase your awareness of His workmanship in your daily life. Listen for any whisper from God nudging you to marvel at His greatness and strength.
Receive. God loves you. Creation is a gift from God for you to enjoy and steward. Employ your five senses to savor time with God in creation. Receive the tender care of God to your soul through His intentional and creative work which surrounds you.
